That’s right, this Mint Chocolate Chip Protein Shake has super powers! No, it won’t make you fly or make you shoot spider webs from your wrists. But close-ish. There is a “Super Food” ingredient that makes this recipe super- Spirulina.
Spirulina, in short, is algae. Yep, from the sea! Don’t be alarmed. A group of genius people have found a way to make it edible and told us why we should consume it. Here are a few reasons why you need spirulina in your diet: it has 50% to 70% protein/amino acids, potassium, antioxidants, fights allergies, regulates blood pressure, and improves muscle strength. Spirulina also boosts immunity! With the weather transitioning to fall, this may be a good excuse to add it to your diet. This one is for the ladies- Spirulina fights PMS symptoms!
You are probably wondering how spirulina tastes. Well let’s start with the smell. It is from the sea so it does smell a bit fishy. HOWEVER, it does not taste fishy. The tastes can be pungent so mixing it in a smoothie is the best way to consume it.
I’ve used Spirulina in many smoothies but and this is my favorite!! You hardly know there is spirulina in it. If you like mint chocolate chip ice cream, you’ll love this protein shake. If you are open-minded enough to buy it then try it! The health benefits are stellar. Bottoms up!
Ingredients
- 2 cups almond milk
- 2-3 tsp spirulina powder
- 1 banana
- 2 tbsp hemp seeds
- 10 mint leaves
- 2 tbsp dark chocolate chunks/chips (I used Trader Joe’s brand)
- 1 small fistful of baby spinach
- 1 tbsp protein powder (I used natural flavor Sun Warrior)
- 1 tbsp natural peanut butter (or other nut butter), optional
Instructions
- Add all ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth and enjoy!
Note: I like to add a few ice cubes to the blender for a cooler shake. You can go without ice or you add a few cubes to the end product.
